Firefly study 2007 observations

Total rainfall during emergence observation 238mm

Rough count of aerial sightings in one hectare of forest area at an elevation of 714 metres, through which a swampy creek runs and includes a clearing of approximately 1100 sq.m.in area.
Rainfall figures provided are BoM standard 9am to 9am registrations.

2007 Notes

1. First sighting for the season
2. 2 Atyphella atra and 2 Atyphella similis captured flying in the same area tonight.
3. 4 Atyphella atra and 3 Atyphella similis specimens captured for external researchers.
4. We may have two separate species colonising in close proximity. The larger variety (possibly A.similis) is definately confirmed as flying in from a gully 0.5km NE from the A.atra colony. Will check this gully out next year.
5. Dramatic drop in numbers tonight. Will be interesting to see if we have another new large scale emergence.
6. Short downpour of rain at the usual viewing time has kept the fireflies on the ground.
7. Apparent earlier than usual end of the annual emergence for 2007
