One of the ongoing tasks initiated some years ago at this location was the installation of
a rainfall station to more accurately record the rainfall upon which the study organisms
within our research area depend.
Daily rainfall records of this area have been kept from 1966 to the present day.
A graphical representation of 1966-2007 rainfall appears below.
This local area information has been
invaluable in our current studies being done here.
In conjunction with the Bureau of Meteorology, in 2001 our rainfall measuring equipment
was brought into line with the replacement of our old standard 100mm diameter raingauge
with the BoM 125mm diameter gauge.
The difference in rainfall measurements between the old 100mm and the new 125mm gauges is
surprising, showing a deficiency ranging from 10% to as high as 20% measured in the 100mm
gauge which is obviously going to make future annual totals appear greater.
In addition a
BoM Pluviograph that electronically records rainfall over a 90 day period has been
installed to verify the daily manual readings that have been manually sent electronically
by a Remote Operating Terminal (ROT) to the BoM each wet day. An optional internet
daily rainfall lodgement application system has also now been provided by the BoM.
