Springbrook Research Centre

One of the ongoing tasks initiated some years ago at this location was the installation of
a rainfall station to more accurately record the rainfall upon which the study organisms
within our research area depend.
Daily rainfall records of this area have been kept from 1966 to the present day.
A graphical representation of 1966-2010 rainfall appears below.
This local area rainfall information
has been invaluable in our current studies here.
In conjunction with the Bureau of Meteorology, in 2001 our rainfall measuring equipment
was brought into line with the replacement of our old standard 100mm diameter raingauge
with the BoM 125mm diameter gauge.
The difference in rainfall measurements between the old 100mm and the new 125mm gauges is
surprising.
Deficiencies ranging from 10% to as high as 20% depending on the severity of wind
conditions when measured in the 100mm gauge have been recorded and the 150mm gauge is
obviously going to make future annual totals appear greater.
In addition a
BoM Pluviograph that electronically records rainfall over a 90 day period has been
installed to verify the daily manual readings that are submitted via the internet to the
BoM at 9:00am each rain day.
We have recently installed our own weather station online for our use and that of the
Springbrook community.
